).
REAL MADRID was formed 6th March 1902, and the title
Real (Real is Spanish for Royal) was bestowed upon the club by King Alfonso XIII
in 1920.
Real Madrid play at the world famous Bernabeu stadium, named
after Santiago Bernabeu who became club president in 1943 and funded the club's
subsequent domination of Spanish football.
Bernabeu Stadium has a
capacity of around 87 000 (76 000 spectators, all seated for European
games).
Since 1931, Real Madrid have won the Spanish League championship
an incredible 28 times(25 times after WWII). The most recent title came in
2000/01.
Since 1928, Real Madrid have been runners-up to the Spanish
title 15 times.

Statistics
In February 1957, the club began an unbeaten run at home that
lasted an astounding 114 games and ended eight years later in March
1965.
Between 1956 and 1960, Real Madrid won the first five European
Cups. They won it again in 1966, and finally again after 32 years in 1998 with
another 2 in 2000 and in their centenary year 2002.
The team that
dominated Spain and Europe in the 50's have to go into history books as the most
famous and the best side ever to play, featuring legends as Alfredo di Stefano,
Gento and Ferenc Puskas, by many considered better players than Pele ever
was.
A sign of how good Real Madrid was and how enjoyable they must have
been to watch even for the opposite sides fans was clearly shown in the 1960
European Cup Final were Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3, the crowd was
so impressed that they refused to leave the ground until the Real Madrid team
had performed a lap of honour.
The following year the team became the
inaugural World Club champions, when they once again in an impressing
performance beat their South American champions Penarol 5-1.
Real Madrid
have had many famous and great players wearing its jersey, names such as
Santiago Bernabeu (1911-1927), Ricardo Zamora (1930-36), Alfredo Di Stefano
(1953-1964), Paco Gento (1953-1971), Raymond Kopa (1956-59), Ferenc Puskas
(1958-67), Gunter Netzer (1973-76), Paul Breitner (1974-1977), Jose Antonio
Camacho (1973-1989), Emilio Butragueno (1983-1995), Hugo Sanchez (1985-1992). IN
the 90ties the Dane Michael Laudrup joined the club (1994-96), next the
Portugusian star Louis Figo and nowadays the Brazilian Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos
and Robinho ( the coming star) as well as the French-algerian Zidane and the
British David Beckham.
Writing these lines (primo March 2006) Real Madrid has
shifted President, perhaps for the best of the club. The new Body wishes
sportmanship and less money on the agenda, which - I believe - is the only way
for the future, in case Real Madrid shall not transfer to an old
furniture.....
